How can elements of these trailers be used in creating your own ?
Looking at our chosen 3 relating horrors i have picked out elements from the trailers we could include in our own horror trailer , these elements include things such as themes ,characters , camera shots , sound and mis-e-scene.
Click on the 3 clips below to watch our chosen horrors:
Wrong Turn 1
Cabin in the Woods
Scream 1
Camera Shots
Starting with camera shots which there are many of very effective ones though out the 3 trailers which we could use to inspire us in creating our own horror trailer.
Wrong Turn
This screen capture above is from Wrong Turn 1 trailer , this is an over the shoulder shot right at the end of the trailer when the killer rises up in the camera next to the girl, this shows the girl was not expecting to see the killer and thought see was safe and they show this by having both the characters back's to us. This camera angle is really scary because we are all lead into a sense of false security as we think the girl is safe, we then know she isn't when the dramatic music cuts in he the killer rises slowly and swings his axe towards her, the trailer cuts to black so we are then left wondering what happen to the girl next. this could be a good way to end the trailer as it could make the audience think there could be a second film.
The screen shot below is also from Wrong Turn this is an extreme close up which the camera slowly pans into , this is to show the audience the extreme detail of the killers , you can see the red eye symbolizing evil and anger, this also is making the audience feel uneasy and that the killer is watching everyone . This would be very effective in our trailer by doing something similar like making a shot of the killers eye peering through trees or bushing showing the audience we are in a woods and the killer is watching our girl character walking her dog.
Cabin in the Woods
This image below is an establishing shot, it is made to set the scene , but with this location it gives the audience and sense of being abandoned and lost, we could use a wide establishing shot in ours to show how big and empty our woodlands setting is ,
This image below shows an extreme close up, this is clearing showing the woman's terrified and panicked expression . They tend to use quite a lot of close ups in horrors to show the fear in all the characters to try and get the audience to relate to their own fear from watching the horror. We could use some close up's in our trailer to show the girls worry as she starts to realize shes being watched.
Lastly this is a low ground shot this is there to show the location and make it look slightly creepy we could defiantly use this angle in our trailer to show the woodland location where there girl is located alone walking her dog . We could also use this if there is any abandoned shacks or huts in our woods where the girl could hide in from the killer as this angle would show the whole hut/shack she was in an the entire surroundings and if the killer was approaching or watching the shack.
Scream
This is a subjective point of view trying to show someone in the scene is watching her (normally the killer), We coud use this in out trailer really effectively by showing the subjective point of view of he stalker watching the girl in the woods from many angles and her being completely unware to start of with.
Characters
Wrong Turn - in wrong turn there is a group of young adults aged between 18-25 which is quite typical of horror movies as they relate the characters to the main target audience of the film which is 15-25. In this group of young adults in the movie they have the typical male american jocks which are seen as a icon to boys watching the film as there always attractive , sporty and very popular with the girls and loved by the female audience for their fun personal and looks. Theres the typical girly girl which are a massively common character in horrors , they are always hot and very popular but seem to get themselves in trouble or find themselves lost somewhere spooky .There is also the group of killers which are a family of inbreed creatures which have been used in other horrors such as "Hills Have Eyes"so are also quite a common horror charecter. In our trailer we have a girl alone walking her dog which is very typical of horrors so links our characters to some characters in Wrong Turn. The killer is staking the young girl but we don't want him to be creature like we want him to be a normal looking person to give the audience i false scene of the security as they think he is no threat but soon learn they are all wrong when he starts to show an unhealthy interest in the girl.
Cabin in the Woods - cabin in the woods also includes a group of young adults on vacation in a sparse loactions. The group also includes popular jocks and hot girls typical of America horrors such as "Final destination" and any others. As Cabin in the Woods is a new modern horror they have created the film as a hybrid of horror with some sci-fi themes. The killers in this film are very different from many other horrors as they have planted many traps and cameras and have a special room where they watch all the young adults on their vacation. unlike this modern horror we want to keep our killer more simple and classic .
Scream - the characters in scream are most like our trailer , there is the main female character which is being watch/stalked in the woods whilst she is alone like the film scream , then we have the killer who watches her for awhile then makes himself known and continues to stalk her until he kills her, just like the killer in scream. this is the classic simple horror and most popular slasher style of horror just like our trailer.
